CODA 2019
CODA Games 2019
One of the more exciting next steps came from the “Power of Sports” workshop at the March 2019 CODA Youth As Voices of Change Summit with CODA themed Homecomings and athletic games. This provides an opportunity for student-athletes at the high school and collegiate level, together with student volunteers to bring CODA messaging directly to spectators. CODA Homecomings/Games include: student-athletes wearing the CODA 2-star logo on helmets, cleats, sticks, and tee shirts; materials and information distributed to spectators; tabling and field announcements made throughout the games. Bringing CODA to places where the community gathers, and creating positive and proactive messaging around a topic that many don’t know about is the essence of CODA.
CODA Week 2019
The 3rd Annual CODA Weeks saw unprecedented expansion and growth of the CODA movement – now celebrated in almost every public high school across Westchester County, and Solomon Schechter High School, Carmel High School and Greenwich High School. Thanks to the success of the Out of the Shadows CODA Walk, and the support of the Westchester County Youth Bureau, Montefiore Hudson Valley Collaborative, the Valhalla High School Peer Leadership Club, and so many individual donations the CODA Weeks Celebration Boxes included #CODAConnects wallet cards, the 2 star CODA sports decals and stickers, the Story Behind the Stars postcards, and the What’s Important To Me strength-based advocacy tool.
On April 4th, a special CODA Weeks Celebration took place at White Plains High School where the harris project founder, Stephanie Marquesano, was honored to receive the Dr. Harold Keltz Distinguished Public Health Service Award from the Westchester County Department of Health 2019 Public Health Award. Special thanks to Westchester County Legislator MaryJane Shimsky for the nomination, and Dr. Sherlita Amhler, Dr. Robert Baker, and the Board of Health for this prestigious award, and the administration, staff, and students of White Plains High School, especially Dr. Joseph Ricca, SAS Counselor Susan Murphy, and the SADD Club for hosting a very memorable day.
